Win a Vermont Dream Ski Home!

Here’s a ‘LUXE’ idea to start the New Year.

You may have seen on HGTV, that Scripps Network, LLC is doing a Sweepstakes for this Vermont Dream Home.

The contest runs January 1st – February 18th.

The winner gets this dream ski home (furnished – nice!), a SUV, and $500,000.

You can sign up twice per day – one time each at these two ‘sister’ websites below.

Also, entry is by each person’s valid email, not household.

“Winner will be contacted in person on or about March 12, 2011 (subject to change) in the form of a “ambush style” visit by Main Sponsor representatives…”

That works for me!  I’d better tidy the front hallway.

Luxury Home for Sale in Chicago

825 Glen Oak Drive is an extremely private 1.6 acre lot on Chicago’s North Shore, with it’s own private beach. With an outdoor pool, landscaped gardens and steps leading down to the 75 ft long beachfront, the home has the feel of a private compound, with more than enough space for the kids playing basketball on the western area to be well out of earshot of the adults enjoying cocktails on the eastern bluff overlooking lake Michigan.

The only real issue is the fact that you will be inundated with phone calls from friends and family wanting to share the beach and overlooks. Details of the luxury home for sale in Chicago include:

Circular driveway provides lots of parking and convenience
Heated pool
1.6 lush acres of landscape and gardens
3 Car attached Garage
Cedar Shake Roof
2 Fountains
5-zoned heating
Master Suite is huge, with large walk-in dressing rooms.
Master Bath Spa
Additional 2nd floor Family Room with skylights, built-ins, and fireplace
2 Subzero Refrigerators
Lot is 75 feet of Beach Front

But one of the main attractions is the location. Situated a short walk from the Beach at Tower Road Park, one of the best coffee shops in Winnetka, Café Aroma, and Hubbard Woods Park, which has been used as a backdrop for several famous movies, including “Home Alone,” Winnetka offers just about everything one could ask for in terms of lifestyle.

The agent, Phyllis Rothschild of Coldwell Banker, describes it as “Fabulous California-style living,” although my feeling is that it could perhaps do with some “California-style pricing,” to go with the living. Having said that, the price was recently reduced from $6.2 million to $4.8 million, Despite the fact that lending issues and lack of buyer commitment are widespread, the North Shore market is an active one – there were 4 contracts signed in Phyllis Rothschild’s Winnetka office this weekend alone.

Chicago Luxury Home for Sale

luxury home chicago

Regular readers will know of my fondness for Seth Godin, and his maxim that to be successful, one must be “remarkable.”

This particular Chicago luxury home for sale on the north shore is one that I consider to be “remarkable,” and the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw it was “attention to detail.” The specifications are too numerous to list in full, but the basics are: 4 bedroom, 4 full baths & 1 powder room, 2-story, 4,688 square foot English Colonial-style all brick home (6,685 w/finished basement) with 2 car attached heated garage, hardwood floors, custom crown molding, trim and baseboard throughout. 11′ ceilings on the first floor, 10′ Ceilings on the second floor, and 10′ ceilings in the basement which includes a 34′ recreation room, fully equipped media room, full bath and Sauna Room. The list goes on and on, and a full brochure is available for download from the builder.

The other most remarkable feature of this home is the successful transition from indoors to outdoors with the six separate patios, two outdoor fireplaces and screened porch off the breakfast room. The “feel” is almost Japanese in the way nature and artificial landscaping combine to bring the “indoors” outdoors, but in a very English style. I understand more than 100 truckloads of earth were removed to create this garden.

The attention to detail carries all the way through the house from the 8 foot tall solid mahogany front door to the hand carved solid marble fireplace mantels. The list of appliances and fittings reads like a who’s who of luxury interior design companies, although I am not too enamored with the bar – that would have to be replaced – Dark wood paneling and Chesterfields methinks.

The property is situated a short walk from the Lake Shore Country Club, downtown Glencoe, and two blocks from lake Michigan. For those non-Americans reading, a block is an arbitrary distance which would equate to “about 5 minutes walk.”

Glencoe itself has a whole subdivision of Frank Lloyd Wright designed houses with the third largest collection of Wright houses in the world, based on the famous Fireproof house for $5,000. A some what tenuous connection to this property, the price being just a tad more than $5,000. :)

$2,744,000 more to be exact. Although, I am hard pushed to see how they are making a profit at this price.
